Wontons with Sauerkraut and Bratwurst Filling: A Unique Fusion

This recipe combines the classic flavours of German cuisine with the versatility of wonton wrappers for a fun and flavourful twist.

Ingredients:

  • For the Filling:
    • 1 pound cooked bratwurst, casings removed and crumbled
    • 1 cup sauerkraut, drained
    • 1/4 cup chopped onion
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
    • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Wontons:
    • 1 package wonton wrappers
    • 1 egg, beaten
    • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Make the Filling:
    • In a large bowl, combine the crumbled bratwurst, sauerkraut, onion, garlic, Dijon mustard, caraway seeds, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  2. Assemble the Wontons:
    • Lay out a wonton wrapper on a clean work surface.
    • Place about 1 tablespoon of the filling in the centre of the wrapper.
    • Moisten the edges of the wrapper with a little beaten egg.
    • Fold the wrapper over the filling to form a triangle. Press the edges firmly to seal.
    • Repeat with the remaining wonton wrappers and filling.
  3. Fry the Wontons:
    • Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
    • Fry the wontons in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
    • Remove the wontons from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve the wontons hot with your favourite dipping sauce, such as sweet and sour sauce, soy sauce, or a spicy mustard sauce.

Tips:

  • Bratwurst: Use your favourite type of bratwurst. Pre-cooked bratwurst makes this process much faster.
  • Sauerkraut: Drain the sauerkraut well to prevent the filling from being too watery.
  • Wonton Folding: There are many different ways to fold wontons. You can experiment with different shapes.
  • Baking: For a healthier option, you can bake the wontons instead of frying them. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C), brush the wontons with oil, and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Dipping Sauces: Experiment with different dipping sauces to find your favourite. Spicy mustard, a light soy sauce with ginger, or a sweet chilli sauce complement the flavour profile well.
  • Filling variations: other ground meats may be substituted for Bratwurst. You can also include diced apple in the filling.
  • Sodium: The sauerkraut, and especially the bratwursts are high in sodium.1 Be very careful while adding additional salt.
