Individual Design & Stitch Count:
Tulip Flower (Make 1)
Start with Colour A.
Round 1: Ch 2. In the second ch from the hook, work 6 sc. (6 sts)
Alternatively, you can use a magic ring and work 6 sc into the ring. This is often preferred for amigurumi to create a tighter centre.
Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts)
Round 3: (Sc in the next st, inc in the next st) 6 times. (18 sts)
Round 4-6: Sc in each st around. (18 sts)
Round 7 (Petals): We will now create the three petals.
- First Petal: Ch 1, turn. Sc in the next 6 sts. (6 sts)
- Row 2 of Petal: Ch 1, turn. Dec, sc in the next 2 sts, dec. (4 sts)
- Row 3 of Petal: Ch 1, turn. (Dec) 2 times. (2 sts)
- Row 4 of Petal: Ch 1, turn. Dec. (1 st)

- FO.
- Rejoin yarn to the first unworked stitch of Round 6.
- Third Petal: Ch 1, turn. Sc in the next 6 sts. (6 sts)
- Repeat Rows 2-4 of the petal instructions.
- FO.
Flower Center (Make 1)
Start with Colour C.
Round 1: Ch 2. In the second ch from the hook, work 6 sc. (6 sts)
Again, a magic ring can be used here for a neater centre.
Round 2: (Sc in the next st, inc in the next st) 3 times. (9 sts)
- Sl st to the first st to join.
- FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Stem (Make 1)
Start with Colour B.
Row 1: Ch 16 (or desired length).
- Starting in the second ch from the hook, sc in each ch across. (15 sts)
- Do not FO. We will continue with the first leaf.
Leaves (Make 2)
Continue with Colour B, working off the stem.
First Leaf:
- Row 1: Ch 9.
- Starting in the second ch from the hook, sl st in the next st, sc in the next st, hdc in the next 3 sts, dc in the next 2 sts, [2 dc] in the last st.
- Continue working down the other side of the leaf: dc in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts, sc in the next st, sl st in the last st.
- Sl st to the last st of the stem to secure the leaf.
- Ch 1, turn. Sl st back up the stem to the desired position for the second leaf.
Second Leaf:
- Repeat the instructions for the First Leaf.
- Sl st to the stem to secure.
- FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Finishing Instructions & Tips
- Attach the Flower Center: Using the long tail from the flower centre and a tapestry needle, position the centre inside the tulip petals. The centre should peek out slightly from the top. Sew it securely in place, stitching from the centre piece to the inside of the tulip. Weave in and trim the ends.
- Shape the Tulip: Gently pinch and pull the three petals to give the flower its characteristic cup shape. You can also lightly steam the petals with an iron to help them hold their shape better.
- Attach the Stem: Position the finished stem to the bottom centre of the tulip. Using the tail from the stem and a tapestry needle, stitch the top of the stem to the bottom of the tulip. Go around a few times to make sure it is very secure. Weave in and trim all remaining ends.
- Weaving in Ends: The most important tip for a clean finish is to weave in all loose ends securely. Use your tapestry needle to go back and forth through the stitches on the inside of your piece, changing direction once or twice to lock the yarn in place. Trim closely to the fabric.
- Stitch Tension: Keep your tension consistent throughout the project. Using a magic ring for the base of the flower and the centre will help create a tighter, more professional-looking piece.
- Customisation:
- Size: You can easily change the size of the tulip by using a different weight of yarn and a corresponding hook size.
- Colour: Experiment with different colour combinations. You can use two-tone petals or variegated yarn for a unique look.
- Application: This pattern is perfect for making a bouquet, a brooch, a hair clip, or a beautiful appliqué for a blanket or hat. You can even add a small amount of stuffing to the tulip head for a more plump, amigurumi-style flower.
