Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/4 cup orange zest
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

Step 1: Combine dry ingredients

Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.

Step 2: Cut in butter

Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 3: Add cranberries and orange zest

Stir in cranberries and orange zest.

Step 4: Add buttermilk and egg

Combine buttermilk and egg in a small bowl. Pour into dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Step 5: Form dough

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for a few turns. Pat dough into a 1-inch thick circle.

Step 6: Cut scones

Cut dough into 8 wedges.

Step 7: Bake scones

Place scones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 8: Cool and serve

Let scones cool on baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve warm with butter and jam.
