Sunflower Shields

Sunflower Shields

Sunflower Shields: Carry a Pocketful of Sunshine

Sunflower Shields are miniature talismans crafted from sunflowers, symbolising positivity and resilience. Believed to deflect negativity with their bright and cheerful aura, these sunflower charms can be carried as a reminder to face challenges with optimism.

Disclaimer: It's important to note that Sunflower Shields are symbolic charms and hold no magical power to ward off negativity. However, carrying a Sunflower Shield can serve as a source of personal inspiration and a reminder to cultivate a positive outlook.

Materials:

  • Small sunflowers: Select sunflower heads that are almost fully bloomed, with bright yellow petals and a large, dark centre. Choose sunflowers with stems that can be dried without breaking.
  • Sharp scissors or pruners: Sharp tools are necessary for carefully cutting the sunflower heads.
  • Desiccant (optional): Desiccant beads help absorb moisture and prevent mould growth during the drying process.
  • Sandpaper (optional): Fine-grit sandpaper can be used to smooth out any rough edges on the dried sunflower head (optional).
  • Clear sealant (optional): A thin layer of clear sealant can help protect the dried sunflower head from dust and minor wear (optional).
  • Jewellery clasp or keychain attachment: Choose a small clasp or keychain attachment that complements the size and style of your Sunflower Shield.
  • Glue: A strong adhesive suitable for bonding the sunflower head to the chosen clasp/keychain attachment.

Instructions:

  1. Preparing the sunflowers: Using sharp scissors or pruners, carefully cut the sunflower head from the stem, leaving a short stalk for easier handling.
  2. Drying the sunflower head: There are two methods for drying:
    • Air drying: Place the sunflower head in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Allow it to dry naturally for several days or weeks, depending on the size and humidity levels.
    • Desiccant drying (optional): In a container, surround the sunflower head with desiccant beads to absorb moisture and expedite drying. This method can take 1-2 days.
  3. Finishing the sunflower head (optional): Once completely dry, you can use fine-grit sandpaper to gently smooth out any rough edges on the back of the sunflower head. Apply a thin layer of clear sealant (optional) following the manufacturer's instructions for additional protection.
  4. Attaching the clasp/keychain: Apply a small amount of glue to the back of the sunflower head and firmly attach the chosen clasp or keychain attachment. Allow the glue to dry completely before handling.

Tips:

  • Sunflower selection: Choose sunflowers that are free of blemishes or signs of insect damage.
  • Drying process: Monitor the drying process to prevent mould growth. If the sunflower head starts to soften or discolour, discard it and begin with a fresh one.
  • Alternatives: If using a real sunflower head proves difficult, you can find small, realistic-looking artificial sunflowers for crafting your shields.
  • Customisation: Consider incorporating other symbolic elements into your Sunflower Shield. Small ladybug charms or citrine beads can add a touch of luck and positivity.

Sunflower Shields are more than just decorative charms; they are wearable reminders to cultivate inner sunshine and navigate challenges with optimism. Carry a pocketful of sunshine and let the bright aura of the sunflower inspire resilience and a positive outlook.
