Blossom Terrariums: Cultivate Tiny Worlds of Floral Wonder

Blossom terrariums are captivating miniature gardens encapsulated within glass. Unlike traditional terrariums that often focus on foliage, these creations celebrate the vibrant world of blooming flowers. They symbolise self-contained ecosystems of beauty and growth, making them a delightful addition to any home or a thoughtful handmade gift.

Materials:

  • Glass container: Choose a clear glass container with a lid to create a closed terrarium environment. Interesting shapes like globes, domes, or apothecary jars add a touch of whimsy.
  • Drainage layer: Small pebbles or gravel will ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot.
  • Activated charcoal: This purifies the water and helps prevent mould growth.
  • Potting mix: A well-draining, light potting mix specifically formulated for terrariums is ideal.
  • Blooming flowers: Select a variety of miniature, slow-growing flowering plants that thrive in humid environments. Here are some excellent choices:
    • African violets (Saintpaulia)
    • Mini cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum)
    • Cryptanthus (Earth Stars)
    • Bromeliads (Guzmania, Vriesea)
    • Mini orchids (Phalaenopsis)
    • Violets (Viola)
    • Mini primroses (Primula)
  • Decorative elements (optional): Small figurines, colourful pebbles, or a layer of moss can add personality to your terrarium.

Instructions:

  1. Clean the container: Wash the glass container thoroughly with warm, soapy water and dry it completely.
  2. Create the drainage layer: Add a 1-inch layer of pebbles or gravel to the bottom of the container.
  3. Add the charcoal: On top of the drainage layer, sprinkle a thin layer of activated charcoal.
  4. Prepare the potting mix: Slightly moisten the terrarium potting mix.
  5. Planting: Using a spoon or tweezers, carefully create a well in the centre of the potting mix. Gently place your chosen flowers in the prepared well, ensuring their roots are covered. Add more potting mix to secure the plants and create a natural-looking slope.
  6. Decorate (optional): If desired, use tweezers to add decorative elements like figurines, pebbles, or moss.
  7. Watering: Mist the inside of the terrarium lightly with a spray bottle. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
  8. Lid placement: Keep the lid closed for the first few weeks to establish humidity. Once the plants are thriving, you can occasionally leave the lid slightly ajar for ventilation.

Tips:

  • Light: Place your Blossom Terrarium in indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate flowers.
  • Temperature: Maintain a consistent room temperature between 65°F and 75°F (18°C and 24°C).
  • Watering: Only mist the terrarium when the condensation on the sides begins to clear. Overwatering is the most common cause of terrarium failure.
  • Trimming: Regularly prune any overgrown foliage or spent flowers to maintain the terrarium's shape and encourage new growth.
  • Enjoy the serenity: Blossom terrariums require minimal maintenance and reward you with a captivating display of floral beauty for months to come.

With a little creativity and these handy tips, you can cultivate your own miniature world of blooming wonder within a Blossom Terrarium.
