Chocolate Churros with Orange Glaze

Chocolate Churros with Orange Glaze: A Citrusy Twist on a Classic

Indulge in a delightful twist on the classic churro with these Chocolate Churros with Orange Glaze! Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and dipped in rich chocolate, these churros boast a refreshing burst of citrus from the zesty orange glaze.

Ingredients:

For the Churros:

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (113g) water
  • 1/4 cup (56g) unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the Orange Glaze:

  • 1 cup (240ml) powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

For the Chocolate Dipping Sauce (optional):

  • 1/2 cup (115g) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup (59ml) heavy cream

Instructions:

  1.   Make the Churros: In a saucepan, combine the water, butter, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  2.   Once boiling, remove from heat and immediately add the flour all at once. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until a thick dough forms.

3.   Let the dough cool slightly for about 5 minutes. Then, beat in the egg one at a time until fully incorporated.

4.  Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip.

5.   Heat enough vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).

6.   Pipe out the churro dough into the hot oil, cutting the desired length with scissors as you pipe.

7.   Fry the churros for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.

8.    Drain the churros on paper towels to remove excess oil.

9.    Make the Orange Glaze: While the churros cool, whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, orange zest, and a pinch of salt (optional) in a bowl until smooth and pourable.

10.  Make the Chocolate Dipping Sauce (optional): In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until simmering. Remove from heat and add the chocolate chips. Let sit for a few minutes, then whisk until smooth and glossy.

11.   Assemble and Serve: Dip the churros in the orange glaze or chocolate dipping sauce (or both!), letting any excess drip off. Serve immediately while warm and crispy.

Tips:

  • If you don't have a piping bag, you can transfer the dough to a sturdy zip-lock bag and snip off a small corner.
  • Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying, or the churros will be greasy.
  • Don't overcrowd the pot when frying the churros.
  • The orange glaze can thicken as it sits. If needed, add a little more orange juice to thin it out.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of orange zest in the glaze to your preference.
