1. Front Body Panel (1 Piece)
- Drafting Box: Draw a box 16 cm wide times 28 cm high.
- Contour Steps:
- Mark the vertical centre line.
- At the top, draft a smooth dome curve tapering from 13.5 cm wide down to the neck curve at 11.5 cm wide (located 10 cm down from the top).
- Gently swell the sides out to 16 cm at the hips (located 19 cm down from the top), then curve inward to 12 cm at the bottom edge.
- Seam Allowance: Add 0.6 cm (1/4") all around the outer perimeter.
2. Back Body Panel (1 Piece)
- Draft identically to the Front Body Panel shape (16 cm wide times 28 cm high contoured).
3. Hood / Head Panel Overlay (1 Piece)
- Trace the top 11 cm portion of the Front Body Panel (including the dome and neck waist curve).
- Draw an inner oval cutout in the centre measuring 7 cm high times 6 cm wide for the face window.
4. Face Inset (1 Piece)
- Draft an oval measuring 8 cm high times 7 cm wide out of cream felt or smooth cotton (includes a 0.5 cm seam overlap to sit beneath the hood window).
5. Flat Bottom Base Oval (1 Piece)
- Drafting: Draw an oval measuring 12 cm long times 8 cm wide.
- Seam Allowance: Add 0.6 cm (1/4") around the circumference.
Step-by-Step Assembly Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Face & Front Panel
- Embroider the Face: On the cream Face Inset oval, hand-embroider two minimal sleeping arch eyes with eyelashes and tiny blush cheek dots using embroidery floss.
- Attach Hood Window: Position the Face Inset behind the central oval cutout of the Hood Panel Overlay. Edgestitch around the inner oval window using a crisp topstitch or blanket stitch to frame the face.
- Layer the Front: Lay the completed Hood & Face piece over the upper portion of the Front Body Panel, aligning top dome and side neck edges. Baste around the outer edges within the seam allowance.
- Decorative Stitching (Optional): Add 2–3 rows of running stitches or geometric embroidery across the apron/waistline to celebrate the modern folk look.
Step 2: Assemble Front and Back Panels
- Place the prepared Front Panel and Back Panel right sides together, aligning side contours.
- Pin along both side edges, from the top dome down to the lower corner, keeping the bottom oval opening open.
- Stitch down both side seams with a 0.6 cm (1/4") seam allowance.
- Optional Opening Placement: Leave a 5 cm opening along one side of the lower waist seam for turning if you prefer a solid bottom base.
Step 3: Attach the Oval Base Disk
- Pin the Flat Bottom Base Oval to the bottom perimeter of the body cylinder, right sides together, matching centre front, centre back, and side seams evenly.
- Stitch in the round around the base circumference using a 0.6 cm seam allowance.
Step 4: Turn, Stuff, and Shape
- Turn the doll right-side out through the open seam or base gap using a chopstick or turning tool to gently push out the top curve and waist curves.
- Press seams lightly with a pressing cloth and warm iron.
- Fill the bottom with a small pouch of poly-pellets if a weighted self-standing base is desired, then stuff firmly with high-loft fibrefill, taking care to fill out the classic hourglass shape smoothly.
- Hand-close any turning gap using a clean Ladder Stitch (Blind Stitch).
Finishing Tips
- Smooth Hourglass Silhouette: To prevent lumps along the curved waist and neck transition, snip small V-shaped notches into the seam allowances along the inner curves before turning right-side out.
- Aesthetic Weight Balance: Adding a small beanbag or poly-pellet pouch into the base helps the doll stand upright on flat surfaces, enhancing its sculpture-like display appeal.
- Fabric Mix Inspiration: Pair matte natural linen for the body with luxurious cotton velvet or textured corduroy for the hood to create a rich tactile contrast that defines modern Scandinavian or contemporary folk design.
