Materials & Suitable Fabrics
Outer & Liquid Crystal Fabrics
- Liquid Crystal Coated Stretch Satin or Iridescent Thermo-Chromatic Vinyl: Delivers the futuristic colour-shifting or high-gloss metallic finish characteristic of nanotech design.
- Structured Neoprene or Tech-Jersey: Provides clean, architectural lines and excellent shape retention for the midi silhouette without feeling overly rigid.
Lining Fabrics
- Breathable Cotton Modal or Cupro Knit: Ensures soft, hypoallergenic contact against a child's sensitive skin while permitting smooth sliding over inner layers.
Notions & Supplies
- Heavy-duty stretch polyester or nylon thread
- Lightweight fusible tricot interfacing (to stabilise necklines, armholes, and zipper placements)
- Invisible zipper (12-inch) for clean side-seam closures
- Conductive or reflective metallic piping (optional, for enhancing the technological grid look)

Step-by-Step Pattern Drafting
Assumption: Drafted using a form-fitting midi block with geometric contouring. Add ease: +1.5 inches to the chest and +1 inch to the waist for comfortable wear.
1. Front & Back Bodice
- Chest Width: Half-chest measurement (25 inches / 2 = 12.5 inches) plus 0.75 inches ease = 13.25 inches per side (back cut on fold).
- Bodice Length: High Point Shoulder to waist = 10.5 inches plus seam allowances.
- Neckline & Armholes: Clean, high-neck or structured square neckline paired with smooth, fitted armholes.
2. Front & Back Midi Skirt
- Skirt Style: A sleek, tapered A-line or structured midi skirt panel.
- Skirt Length: 18 inches finished length, ending at the mid-calf.
- Panel Division: Optional vertical panel seams to emphasise futuristic geometric lines and house optional piping.
3. Lining & Seam Allowances
- Linings: Duplicate all main bodice and skirt pieces in breathable lining fabric.
- Seam Allowances:
- Neckline & Armholes: 3/8 inch (1 cm)
- Side Seams & Shoulder Seams: 5/8 inch (1.5 cm)
- Waist Seam: 1/2 inch (1.3 cm)
- Hem Allowance: 1.25 inches (3.2 cm)
Construction Instructions
Step 1: Interface Critical Areas
- Apply lightweight fusible tricot interfacing to the wrong side of the neckline, armhole facings, and zipper installation zones to prevent the coated technical fabrics from stretching or distorting.
Step 2: Construct the Bodice
- Sew the front and back outer bodice pieces at the shoulder and side seams. Press seams open carefully (use a pressing cloth to protect liquid crystal/coated surfaces).
- Repeat the process for the inner lining bodice.
- Join the outer bodice and lining along the neckline and armholes, understitch where applicable, turn right-side out, and press flat.
Step 3: Assemble the Midi Skirt
- Sew the front and back skirt panels together at the side seams.
- Finish the skirt lining and slip it inside the outer skirt wrong sides together, basting the upper waist raw edges together.
Step 4: Join Bodice and Skirt
- Pin the completed midi skirt to the lower waist edge of the finished bodice, aligning side seams.
- Stitch the waist seam using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Insert an invisible zipper along the left side seam through both the bodice and skirt layers.
Step 5: Hemming & Finishing
- Press a clean 1.25 inch double-fold hem along the lower edge of the midi skirt and secure with a blind hem or topstitch depending on the fabric finish.
- Inspect all seams, trim stray threads, and wipe the exterior clean of any marking residue with a damp cloth.
Expert Sewing Tips
- Protect Coated Finishes: Liquid crystal and metallic-coated vinyl fabrics can scratch or stick to standard sewing machine feet. Use a Teflon foot or walking foot to ensure smooth fabric feeding without damaging the special coating.
- Needle Selection: Choose a Microtex or Sharp needle (Size 70/10 or 75/11) to puncture dense coated fabrics cleanly without leaving large holes or causing puckers.
- Avoid High Heat: Never apply a hot iron directly to liquid crystal or vinyl surfaces. Always use a low-heat setting with a protective pressing cloth or press exclusively from the lining side.
