The Industrial Ribbed Crossbody

The Industrial Ribbed Crossbody

The Industrial Ribbed Crossbody

Inspired by the raw, utilitarian aesthetics of industrial ventilation ducting, this crossbody bag transforms functional architecture into high-fashion streetwear. Featuring a high-gloss black finish and structured accordion-style ribs, the bag catches and reflects light along its contoured curves—creating a striking contrast between tactile structure and sleek, futuristic style.

Recommended Fabrics & Materials

To achieve the sculptural ribbing and high-shine surface, choose sturdy, non-fraying, or structured materials:

  • Exterior Fabric: High-gloss patent faux leather (vinyl/PVC) or liquid-look coated polyurethane (PU).
  • Lining Fabric: Heavyweight cotton twill or nylon canvas in matte black (provides a clean interior contrast).
  • Structure & Padding:
  • Hardware & Trims:
    • 1× Heavy-duty #5 metallic or high-gloss nylon coil zipper (30 cm).
    • 2× 25 mm D-rings (gunmetal or polished black).
    • 2× 25 mm Swivel snap hooks.
    • 1× 25 mm Strap slider buckle.
    • 1.5 m High-density nylon webbing (25 mm wide) for the adjustable strap.
  • Thread & Needles: Size 90/14 or 100/16 Leather / Microtex needles and bonded nylon/polyester thread (Tex 70).

Finished Medium Size Measurements

  • Length: 28 cm (11 inches)
  • Height: 16 cm (6.3 inches)
  • Depth: 10 cm (4 inches)
  • Strap Length: Adjustable up to 135 cm (53 inches)

Step-by-Step Pattern Drafting & Seam Allowances

Standard Seam Allowance: All pattern pieces include a 1 cm (3/8 inch) seam allowance unless otherwise noted.

Pattern Pieces to Draft:

  1. Main Outer Body Panels (Draft 2):
    • Draft a rectangle 30 cm wide times 40 cm long (includes extra length to compensate for fabric take-up created by the continuous horizontal ribs).
  2. Side Gusset Panels (Draft 2 Outer, 2 Lining):
    • Draft an arch shape: 12 cm wide at the bottom base, tapering to 10 cm wide at the top, with a total height of 18 cm. Curve the top corners smoothly.
  3. Zipper Gusset / Top Panel (Draft 2 Outer, 2 Lining):
    • Draft two strips measuring 30 cm long times 4 cm wide.
  4. Bottom Panel (Draft 1 Outer, 1 Lining):
    • Draft a rectangle measuring 30 cm long times12 cm wide.
  5. D-Ring Tabs (Draft 2 Outer):
    • Draft rectangles measuring 8 cm long times 2.5 cm wide.
  6. Interior Lining Panels (Draft 2 Lining):
    • Draft two flat rectangles measuring 30 cm wide times 18 cm high (flat lining without ribs).

Step-by-Step Construction & Assembly Instructions

Step 1: Channel Stitching & Inserting the Ribs

  1. Mark horizontal channel lines across the wrong side of both Main Outer Body panels, spaced 2.5 cm apart.
  2. Fuse woven interfacing to the wrong side of the patent fabric. Layer the foam stabiliser directly underneath.
  3. Stitch along the marked horizontal lines from top to bottom through the patent outer fabric and foam layer to form parallel tubes.
  4. Thread pieces of 6 mm flexible cord through each channel using a loop Turner or bodkin threader. Trim the cord ends flush with the seam allowance edges.

Step 2: Preparing the Zipper Panel & D-Rings

  1. Sandwich one side of the #5 zipper tape between one Outer Zipper Strip (right sides together) and one Lining Zipper Strip (right side to zipper back).
  2. Stitch with a zipper foot, press panels away from the zipper teeth, and topstitch 3 mm from the fold. Repeat for the second side.
  3. Fold the D-Ring Tab pieces around the D-rings and topstitch close to the hardware. Baste them to the upper short sides of the main gusset piece.

Step 3: Assembling the Outer Shell

  1. Attach the Bottom Outer Panel to the ends of the Zipper Panel to form a continuous outer gusset loop.
  2. Clip the ribbed main panels to the continuous gusset, matching corners and centring the rib patterns.
  3. Stitch all around using a heavy-duty needle, going slow over the padded rib intersections.

Step 4: Constructing the Interior Lining

  1. Sew an optional slip or zippered pocket onto one interior lining piece.
  2. Assemble the lining main pieces to the lining gussets in the same manner as the outer shell, leaving a 12 cm opening along the bottom edge for turning.

Step 5: Joining & Finishing

  1. Open the main zipper halfway. Unfold the bag so the outer shell and lining are right-sides together, inserting the outer bag inside the lining bag.
  2. Align the top perimeter edges and stitch securely around the entire opening.
  3. Turn the bag right side out through the opening in the lining. Press the lining neatly into place, fold the turning gap inward, and stitch it closed.
  4. Thread the nylon webbing through the slider buckle and swivel snap hooks to construct the adjustable shoulder strap, then attach it to the D-rings.

Key Tips for Sewing High-Gloss Patent & Ribbed Bags

  • Teflon or Walking Foot: High-gloss vinyl and PU will stick to a standard metal presser foot. Use a non-stick Teflon foot or a walking foot to ensure smooth, even feeding.
  • Avoid Pins: Pins leave permanent holes in patent materials. Use sewing clips (Wonder Clips) exclusively.
  • Baking Paper / Tissue Paper Hack: If the patent coating sticks to the needle plate, place a strip of tissue paper underneath the material while stitching and tear it away afterward.
  • Grade the Bulk: Where the continuous ribbed channels meet the perimeter seams, trim the internal cord 1 cm short inside the seam allowance to eliminate bulk and prevent needle breakage.
  • Thread Tension & Stitch Length: Increase your stitch length to 3.5 mm – 4.0 mm. Perforations that are too close together will weaken patent fabrics and cause seam tearing.
