The Hanbok-Ribbon Backpack

The Hanbok-Ribbon Backpack

The Hanbok-Ribbon Backpack

Inspired by the elegance of traditional Korean attire, the Hanbok-Ribbon Backpack reimagines the iconic otgoreum (the traditional ribbon tie of the hanbok jacket) as a striking focal closure. Combining structured modern bag architecture with fluid, historic grace, the bag features a crisp fold-over top anchored by a dramatic, flowing bow. The contrast between structured lines and sweeping satin ribbons makes this piece a sophisticated fusion of heritage craftsmanship and contemporary street style.

Recommended Fabrics & Materials

To honour the traditional inspiration while ensuring durability and structure, select fabrics with rich texture and strong body:

  • Exterior Fabric: Heavyweight cotton canvas, structured silk jacquard, brocade, or high-grade synthetic hanbok satin (Gongdan or Yangdan backed with heavy interfacing).
  • Ribbon / Bow Fabric: Medium-to-heavy silk satin or satin duchess in a contrasting or complementary jewel tone (e.g., crimson, jade, or deep navy against a cream or charcoal body) for crisp bow loops and cascading tails.
  • Lining Fabric: Premium cotton twill or silk-look rayon lining.
  • Interfacing & Structure:
    • Heavyweight fusible woven interfacing (e.g., Pellon SF101) for all outer panels.
    • 2 mm foam stabiliser (Flex-Foam or Style-Vil) for the front, back, and bottom panels.
  • Hardware & Trims:
    • 1× Internal magnetic snap button (for flap security under the bow).
    • 2× 25 mm Square rings or D-rings (gunmetal, brushed brass, or muted gold).
    • 2× 25 mm Strap slider buckles.
    • 2 m High-density matching cotton/nylon webbing or self-fabric strap tubes.
  • Thread & Needles: Size 80/12 or 90/14 Microtex/Universal needles and Tex 50–70 polyester thread.

Finished Medium Size Measurements

  • Width: 26 cm (10.2 inches)
  • Height (Flap Folded): 34 cm (13.4 inches)
  • Depth: 10 cm (4 inches)
  • Strap Length: Adjustable up to 85 cm (33.5 inches) per shoulder strap

Step-by-Step Pattern Drafting & Seam Allowances

Standard Seam Allowance: All pattern pieces include a 1 cm (3/8 inch) seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

Pattern Pieces to Draft:

  1. Main Body Panel (Draft 2 Outer, 2 Lining):
    • Draft a rectangle measuring 28 cm wide times 36 cm high.
  2. Fold-Over Top Flap (Draft 2 Outer, 1 Interfacing):
    • Draft a rectangle measuring 28 cm wide times 22 cm high. Curve the two lower corners with a 4 cm radius.
  3. Bottom Panel (Draft 1 Outer, 1 Lining):
    • Draft a rectangle measuring 28 cm long times 12 cm wide.
  4. Side Gusset Panels (Draft 2 Outer, 2 Lining):
    • Draft a rectangle measuring 12 cm wide times 36 cm high.
  5. Hanbok Ribbon / Otgoreum Straps (Draft 2 Short Ribbon, 2 Long Ribbon):
    • Short Ribbon Tube (Left side of bow): Draft a strip 8 cm wide times 40 cm long (finished width 3 cm). Angle one end at 45 degrees.
    • Long Ribbon Tube (Right side of bow): Draft a strip 8 cm wide times 65 cm long (finished width 3 cm). Angle one end at 45 degrees.
  6. Strap Anchor Tabs & Grab Handle (Draft 2 Tabs, 1 Handle):
    • Tabs: 8 cm times 4 cm.
    • Handle: 24 cm times 8 cm.

Step-by-Step Construction Instructions

Step 1: Interfacing and Preparing Sub-Assemblies

  1. Fuse heavy woven interfacing to all Outer Body, Flap, and Gusset pieces. Layer foam stabiliser onto the main body panels.
  2. Construct the Hanbok Ribbons: Fold each Ribbon piece lengthwise (right sides together). Stitch along the long edge and angled end (1 cm seam allowance). Trim corners, turn right side out, roll seams smooth, and press with a press cloth.
  3. Construct Handle & Shoulder Straps: Fold the Grab Handle and strap tabs into double-fold strips, topstitch along both edges, and thread through the D-rings/sliders.

Step 2: Preparing the Flap & Ribbon Attachment

  1. Mark the centre point of the outer Flap piece, 4 cm up from the curved bottom edge. Install one half of the magnetic snap on the lining-side Flap piece.
  2. Position the raw ends of the two Ribbon straps at the front centre of the Flap according to traditional otgoreum placement (short ribbon overlapping the longer ribbon). Baste securely within the seam allowance.
  3. Place Outer Flap and Lining Flap right sides together. Stitch along the side and bottom curved edges. Turn right side out, press, and topstitch 3 mm from the edge.

Step 3: Assembling the Outer Bag Shell

  1. Baste the D-ring strap anchor tabs to the bottom corners of the Back Body panel. Position the grab handle and main shoulder straps at the top centre edge of the Back Body panel.
  2. Attach the Side Gussets and Bottom Panel to the Front and Back Body panels, forming a structured rectangular open-box shell.
  3. Baste the completed Top Flap to the upper edge of the Back Body panel, right sides together, facing downward.

Step 4: Lining & Final Assembly

  1. Assemble the Lining pieces (Front, Back, Gussets, Bottom) in the same manner, leaving a 15 cm opening along the bottom edge for turning. Install the matching magnetic snap onto the upper front lining panel.
  2. Slide the Outer Shell inside the Lining assembly (right sides together), aligning side seams and top raw edges.
  3. Stitch around the entire top perimeter. Turn the bag right side out through the lining opening.
  4. Press the top edge neatly, topstitch around the upper opening, and slip-stitch or machine-stitch the lining gap closed.

Step 5: Tying the Traditional Hanbok Otgoreum

  1. Fold the flap down and engage the hidden magnetic snap.
  2. Tie the two cascading ribbons into a traditional single-loop otgoreum bow across the centre flap: path the short strap over the long strap, loop under, form a clean flat header knot, and let the long tail drape vertically down the front panel.

Key Tips for Sewing Hanbok Satins & Delicate Bows

  • Prevent Water Spotting & Heat Damage: Silk and synthetic hanbok satins show water marks easily and melt under high heat. Always use a dry iron with a clean press cloth (mullin) when pressing seams.
  • Pointed Turner for Crisp Angles: Use a wooden point turner to gently push out the 45 degrees angled ribbon ends before pressing to achieve sharp, professional points.
  • Microtex Needles: Use a sharp Microtex needle to avoid pulling threads or creating snag lines on delicate satin or brocade ribbon surfaces.
  • Basting Keeps Symmetry: Always hand-baste the heavy ribbon base knot area before final stitching; thick satin layers tend to shift under the presser foot.
  • Fray Check / Edge Sealing: Apply a small drop of liquid seam sealer or heat-seal (if using synthetic satin) on internal ribbon allowances before turning to ensure the knot knotting points never fray under pulling tension.
