The Matte Ceramic-Coated Box Bag

The Matte Ceramic-Coated Box Bag

This medium-sized statement accessory marries the organic, tactile elegance of handcrafted pottery with the modern practicality of structural design. From a distance, it captures the soft, chalky matte aesthetic and artisan weight of a ceramic vessel, yet it remains remarkably featherlight.

Materials & Fabric Specifications

Medium Size Bag Measurements

  • Main Body Box: 22 cm (Width) times 16 cm (Height) times 8 cm (Depth).
  • Side Gussets: 8 cm (Width) times 16 cm (Height) tapering at the top fold.
  • Strap Drop: 55 cm (Adjustable crossbody length).

Pattern Drafting (Full Complete Bag)

  1. Aluminium Shell Panel: Draft a single continuous rectangular template measuring 22 cm wide by 32 cm long. Score fold lines horizontally across the width at 16 cm and 24 cm to form the base and back panel.
  2. Side Gusset Templates: Draft two triangular-oval gusset pieces measuring 8 cm at the base, widening to 8 cm in the middle, and tapering to a rounded top edge matching the 16 cm height.
  3. Fabric Lining Draft: Create identical templates to the aluminium panels with an added 1.5 cm seam allowance on all outer edges for turning and stitching.
  4. Interfacing: Cut 2mm EVA foam panels precisely to the main body and gusset dimensions without seam allowances to prevent bulk at the seams.

Step-by-Step Construction Method

  1. Prepare the Structural Core: Cut the lightweight aluminium sheet according to the main body and gusset templates using heavy-duty shears. Smooth all edges with fine sandpaper.
  2. Apply Matte Finish: Spray the exterior aluminium pieces with a ceramic-matte finish coat or apply the ceramic thermal film, curing completely before assembly.
  3. Assemble the Interior Lining: Sew the canvas lining pieces and pockets together right-sides facing, inserting the EVA foam panels into the lining sleeves to create a soft interior structure.
  4. Rivet the Shell: Use structural rivets and corner brackets to join the aluminium side gussets to the main scored aluminium body wrapper, forming a rigid box frame.
  5. Insert Lining and Bind Edges: Slip the fabric lining inside the aluminium box. Wrap the exposed top raw edges with vegetable-tanned leather binding, securing it with heavy-duty fabric glue and topstitching where applicable.
  6. Attach Hardware: Affix the magnetic clasp to the front flap/opening and secure the side D-rings for the crossbody strap.

Tips for Sewing & Stitching Excellence

  • Needle Choice: When anchoring leather binding or stitching dense canvas layers through pre-punched structural holes, use a size 100/16 leather or heavy-duty denim needle.
  • Glue Basting: Avoid pinning through structural layers. Use double-sided sewing tape or contact cement to hold leather bindings and canvas linings temporarily in place before stitching.
  • Tension Control: Test your machine tension on scrap canvas and leather layers to ensure balanced stitches that won't pucker the fabric binding.
