Pattern Drafting Instructions
Front and Back Bodice
- Block Foundation: Start with a basic child's bodice block adjusted to the chest and waist measurements with 1 inch of ease built-in.
- Front Bodice: Draw a straight neckline across or a gentle scoop 2 inches down from the high shoulder point. Add a vertical dart from the waist up to the bust apex (converted to ease or soft gathers for children's wear).
- Back Bodice: Split the back centre line into two pieces to accommodate an invisible zipper closure. Lower the back neckline by 0.75 inches for comfort.
- Drape Integration: On the front left shoulder seam, mark a notch extending 3 inches across the shoulder. Draw a curved guideline sweeping diagonally across the front chest down to the right waistline to indicate where the permanent chiffon drape stitch-line will anchor.
Front and Back Skirt
- Column Base: Draft a straight pencil or slight A-line skirt starting from the waist down to the floor length (minus finished bodice length).
- Width Calculation: Set skirt hem width to equal High Hip measurement plus 3 inches of walking ease divided by 2 for front and back panels.
- Chiffon Drape Panel: Draft a separate rectangular overlay measuring 24 inches wide by 50 inches long. Shape one short end to fit seamlessly into the left shoulder seam of the bodice, allowing the rest to act as the flowing pallu.
Lining and Seam Allowances
- Bodice and Skirt Lining: Trace main pattern pieces minus the exterior drape. Cut entirely out of soft cotton lawn.
- Seam Allowances: Apply 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) to all structural side and shoulder seams. Apply 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) to the centre back zipper seam. Apply 0.25 inches (0.6 cm) to chiffon raw edges for rolled hems.
Construction Instructions
- Interfacing: Apply lightweight fusible interfacing to the inner front and back neckline facings.
- Bodice Assembly: Sew front and back bodice pieces at the shoulders and side seams. Repeat the exact same steps for the cotton lining.
- Attach Chiffon Drape: Baste the top edge of the chiffon drape panel directly into the left front shoulder seam and along the diagonal sweep line on the front bodice. Secure with a topstitch inside the seam allowance.
- Skirt Construction: Stitch side seams of the main skirt and lining. Attach the skirt top edge to the lower edge of the completed bodice, right sides together.
- Zipper Insertion: Install the 12-inch invisible zipper down the centre back seam, extending from the back neckline down past the waistline into the upper skirt.
- Hemming: Hem the inner column lining to floor length. Finish the bottom edge of the chiffon drape with a delicate narrow rolled hem (or machine-rolled hem foot) to prevent fraying while maintaining a weightless float.
Sewing Tips
- Taming Chiffon: Spray chiffon lightly with a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar or use water-soluble stabiliser underneath when stitching slippery seams to prevent puckering.
- Child Comfort: Ensure all inner seam allowances are finished cleanly using a serger or pinking shears so rough threads never rub against bare skin.
- Secure the Drape: Tack the floating chiffon drape down lightly at the right hip or waist seam with a few invisible hand stitches so the child does not accidentally trip on the trailing fabric while walking or dancing.
