Taking Accurate Measurements for Tailor-Made Garments for Children:
Preparation:
Stand erect and remove any bulky clothing or shoes.
Have a well-fitting string ready to mark the natural waistline.
Ensure the child is relaxed and cooperative during the process.
Gather your tools: measuring tape, pen and paper, and optional string or elastic band.
Body Measurements:
A-C (Neck to Waist): Measure from the nape of the neck to the natural waistline at the front.
A-B (Waist): Wrap the string snugly around the natural waistline.
C (Neck): Measure around the base of the neck, just above the collarbone.
G (Shoulder): Measure from the highest point of one shoulder to the highest point of the other.
J (Top Chest): Measure across the front, approximately 7cm below the base of the throat, between the armholes.
I (Back Shoulder Blades): Measure across the back, between the armholes at the level of the shoulder blades.
L (Chest): Measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape level.
U1 (Hip): Measure around the hip bone, at the widest part.
U (Full Hip): Measure around the widest part of the lower hip, below the abdomen.
A-T (Waist to Full Hip): Measure from the side waist to the widest part of the lower hip.
A-W (Skirt Length): Measure from the natural waistline to the desired skirt length.
C-W (Full Length Garment): Measure from the nape of the neck to the desired hemline of the garment.
Arm Measurements:
K (Armhole): Measure around the armhole opening.
O (Underarm Line): Measure around the arm at the thickest part under the armpit.
Q (Full Sleeve Length): With the arm bent at a 90-degree angle, measure from the shoulder point, over the elbow, to the wrist bone.
Q1 (Wrist): Measure around the wrist just above the wrist bone.
S (Forearm): Measure around the arm at the thickest part below the elbow.
Q2 (Hand): Measure around the hand at the knuckles with the thumb tucked inside the palm.
Pant Measurements:
Length of Pant: Measure from the natural waistline to the desired pant length.
Thigh: Measure around the thigh at the thickest part.
Depth of Crotch: Measure from the centre front of the waist, through the crotch point, to the centre back of the waist.
In-step & Foot: Measure the length of the foot, including the in-step, at a slight angle.
Additional Tips:
- If possible, take measurements twice and ensure consistency.
- Note any specific needs or adjustments desired by the child or parent.
- Be patient and understanding when working with children during the measurement process.
- Consider referring to a children's garment size chart as a starting point.
